CHAPTER 15

The Armstrong’s bow sliced the ocean, sending blue-white sprays misting over the deck. The crew pushed the engines, maintaining a speed of twenty-five knots. There was a constant breeze sweeping over the deck, decreasing the temperature by almost twenty degrees.

Gina Hutson was glad she was smart enough to pack a jacket. She spent most of the trip inside of the bridge, listening to Captain Seabolt’s tales of his past. To her relief, they weren’t sleep-inducing stories. She learned of his upbringing in India and his experience in the Indian Navy, where he was a second-lieutenant on a Kora Class Corvette. He spoke about a rescue-response operation his ship was involved in, when a cargo ship was being attacked by armed pirates.

“Yeah, they saw us coming and tried to run. Luckily, a few of them tried firing at us.” He chuckled. “Dumb idiots. Gave us the excuse we needed. We turned our AK-176 on them, and watched their little boat fall apart.” He proceeded to talk about drug operations and illegal immigration, and how sometimes the Indian Navy would provide assistance to the Coast Guard during task force operations.

It had been over three hours since they departed. Since then, her eyes had been glued to the tracking monitor. The shark continued to approach Hamilton Bay, with intermittent stops every fifteen minutes or so. Her heart jumped each time, believing it had stopped to feed. If so, on what?

Her anxiety worsened when the radio broadcasted the news of the fishing vessel and sailing yacht that the megalodon had sunk. Only, it was broadcasted as a boating accident. According to the report, ‘eye witnesses’ alerted the Coast Guard.

I’m sure that mercenary had nothing to do with that.

It was perfect manipulation. Conceal any evidence of the shark, while also diverting Coast Guard resources away from its projected location.

A shuddering from below shattered her concentration. The snake moved again. It shuffled repeatedly throughout the voyage, bumping hard against the bulkheads. After witnessing the way it had burst from the tunnel door, the entire crew was on edge, fearing that the snake would learn it could bust through the bulkheads.

Gina noticed Seabolt looking nervous and irritated all at once.

“What the hell was I thinking, accepting this job?” he said to himself.

“Money,” Gina said. “There’s two things people are stupid for. Money and sex, and I doubt Gundrum used the latter to attract you to the job.”

“So what if he did?” Seabolt joked.

“Then I’d question your sanity,” she replied. Seabolt nodded and smiled. He studied the chart then went over a few inspection reports.

“There’s a third reason you didn’t consider,” he said.

“And that is?”

“Ego. Or pride. Whichever makes you feel better,” he said. “A pretty scientist like you could’ve made this kind of money anywhere. Hell, you could’ve gotten your own TV show. You’ve got the looks, the degrees, and the personality. But instead, you’ve decided to take on a responsibility of raising a fish that would swallow you without a second’s hesitation. In the back of your mind, you had to expect ulterior motives regarding its creation.
